Bass singers – how low can you go?

Bass singers who can sing a low B♭ are, according to Nikolai Danilin, “more rare than asparagus at Christmas”. But we have them in abundance at The Bach Choir!

Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil (Vespers)

We mention this because we’re currently working through Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil (Vespers), a piece which utilises the bass singers especially effectively. Watch the below video to find out more about this transcendent work, and to hear the incredible range of our basses in The Bach Choir!

The tenors aren’t left out

Rachmaninov was a hard taskmaster evidently because the tenors in this piece haven’t been left out either – they’re required to reach a high Bb at pianissimo, which is arguably just as hard!

Hear an excerpt from our rehearsal

This piece’s most well-known movement is probably Movement 6 so we had to take the opportunity to record an excerpt in our rehearsal…
