We’ve recently been in touch with some of our talented collaborators – we’ve been asking them about their favourite Bach works to celebrate our 150th anniversary this year. In this article, you can hear from Jonny from TikTok sensations the Wellermen (who specialise in glorious harmonies), conductor Anthony Gabriele who we recently performed with at the Royal Albert Hall and St Matthew Passion regulars Ed Lyon and Roderick Williams. They’re all in agreement that the St Matthew Passion is a masterpiece (on this occasion, we’ll forgive Roderick for not being able to commit to it as his favourite Bach work).
Jonny Stewart, singer in The Wellermen – ‘the best composer at marrying liturgy to music’
Anthony Gabriele, conductor – ‘one of the most sublime compositions’
Ed Lyon, Tenor – I love it for the depth and breadth of emotion’
Roderick Williams, Baritone has a tough choice to make
We can’t wait to sing the St Matthew Passion at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 8 March. We’ve got soloists Toby Spence, Simon Shibambu, Lucy Crowe, Carolyn Dobbin, Benjamin Hulett and Christopher Purves joining us alongside Florilegium, David Hill and London Youth Choirs.
