The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in music is on the rise – it’s estimated that 30-50% of the 100,000 tracks uploaded to Spotify every day were composed by AI. It’s becoming increasingly important for everyone to identify what they’re listening to, which is why we wanted to give you a test – can you spot an AI-composed piece from one which was composed by a real-life human composer?
At a recent rehearsal, we asked our singers to sing an excerpt from a real-life composer’s work and compare it to a work which was composed by AI in response to the same brief. The composer in question (who we’ll introduce later in this article) is a composer that we recently commissioned to compose a piece about the Common Swift. With this in mind, we prompted a popular AI agent to compose a piece about this fascinating bird. The results are below – can you tell which work was composed by AI? Watch until the end to find out the answer…
DId you get it right? If you didn’t, don’t worry – it’s becoming increasingly difficult to tell the difference between AI music and music composed by humans. If you come across a piece or song online and you’re not sure whether it’s AI, there are a few ways to tell, which are elaborated on in this video.
The work composed by a human is Stephanie Jayne Amies’ The Swifts of Summer – it’s a work which our singers loved which was commissioned for our Vocalise! Summer Concert which happened in June.
Amies’ expansive work follows the remarkable lives of swifts as they soar from the rooftops of the UK to the skies of Africa and back, capturing their resilience, grace, and joyful screams. Through the music, listeners are invited to share in the wonder of the natural world, to pause, look up, and experience the beauty of these extraordinary birds in motion. The Common Swift was recently red-listed in the UK after a 60% drop in population over the last 25 years – so it’s becoming increasingly urgent that we get in tune with them.
