Elizabeth Watts sings the Et Incarnatus Est

What does it take to bring one of Mozart’s most beautiful arias to life?

In this rehearsal video, soprano Elizabeth Watts sings through the Et Incarnatus Est from Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, accompanied at the piano by our Musical Director, David Hill.

This is a rare glimpse into the process behind the performance — away from the concert hall and before the full forces of choir and orchestra come together.

The Et Incarnatus Est is one of the most intimate moments in Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor. Written for soprano, flute, oboe and bassoon, it is strikingly different in character from some of the Mass’s more dramatic choral passages, with an intricate vocal line that demands both technical precision and expressive freedom. We spoke with Elizabeth Watts about how she approaches arias like this in an interview which we’ll share very soon!

Elizabeth Watts will perform the Et Incarnatus Est with The Bach Choir, David Hill and Britten Sinfonia at Westminster Cathedral on 29 October, as part of a programme featuring Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, alongside works by Brahms and Clara Schumann.
