Much mystery surrounds Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor. The reasons why Mozart never finished the Mass are unclear, but the quality of his choral writing was never in doubt. It’s one of his most ambitious, awe-inspiring and moving works.

The range is extraordinary. Towering choruses segue into moments of striking intimacy – this is part of what earned the piece its informal ‘Great’ title. The Bach Choir’s balance of power and precision makes them the perfect ensemble to perform this work alongside the wonderful Britten Sinfonia, who “ought to enjoy national treasure status” (The Telegraph). The challenging and exposed solo passages will be expertly handled by Elizabeth Watts, Katherine Gregory, Sam Furness and James Platt.

This programme places the Mass alongside works that echo its influences. The overture to The Magic Flute opens the evening before two a cappella works from lifelong friends Clara Schumann and Brahms pave the way for the Mass.

Join to discover a monumental masterpiece filled with mystery, beauty and breathtaking scale.
